Ima, Soko ni Iru Boku is designed to illustrate the horrors of war realistically, but compiled into a fantasy story. Numb people will feel indifferent. Imaginative and empathic people will have a more lasting impression. It's less of an adventure of discovering the unknown, like typical fantasy. It's more of a cautionary tale, weighted by real history.
